Pink Champagne: Strike Me Pink
By Martyn Pepperell
The singer/guitarist duo of Cheryl and Steve O'Conner originally teamed up in 1977 in the Sahara Desert. The past 30 years has seen the duo perform in different groups around the world before moving to New Plymouth in '94 and forming a group called Two's Blues which later became Pink Champagne. 'Strike Me Pink' is the duo's first album and is composed of a mixture of original songs and covers, all influenced by the music of blues and jazz greats of the past including Bessie Smith, Frank Sinatra, T-Bone Walker, BB King and Keb Mo. Pink Champagne definitely holds a candle to their influences. This is a very real album with minimal overdubs or studio effects. I was quite impressed with the classic blues sound these two have captured - Cheryl's vocal chords never fail her and Steve always keeps that groove on the guitar.
