Stylus: Gain Control
By David Harris
The quality of songs, the production and the energy make this a five-star album. Stylus are reminiscent of Supergroove in the way they bring together a collection of different styles and faultlessly mix it into one great album. Guitarist Aja Timu's metal roots have brought a new sound to the band. Paul Matthews (bass), Matt Samuels (vocals) and Dave Rhodes (drums) produced, engineered and mixed the album, infusing it with their personalities as well as recognised skills. With 17 tracks, two live casts and the music video for the single I Was Alone Until Tonight this CD is jam-packed with goodies. Broken Things, The End Of Forever and These Are The Dead are rock tracks with groove, while rap track Never No No is just as catchy. I caught Stylus on their first leg of the Gain Control tour at Auckland's Hysteria. If you haven't seen them live you should. Check out www.myspace.com/stylus, grab some mates and it's a road trip well worth the time spent.
