Aerial: The Space Between
By Peter Dent
Michelle Crompton and Andre Upston (plus guests) have a magnificent new offering on their hands here. Although it is pop with elements of R'n'B, the melodies are haunting and the lyrics deep. First song Only a Kiss is a masterpiece of songwriting and production; while As I Fall which follows sounds like it could be The Corrs - with its lilting harmonies and pop sensibility. Crompton's vocals are truly outstanding: so polished and inviting. I am seriously impressed with the contributions of guitarist Neil Becker (also mandolin and several keyboards) as well as 'groove merchant' Paul Russell on the traps. Other guests include Joost Langeveld (bass), Victoria Kelly (piano), Tony Hopkins (drums on one track), Stephanie Brown (keys on one track) and Anika Moa supplying some vocal arrangements. There are several string players, horn players and loads of loops and samples to keep things interesting. Songs are generally written by the core pair of Aerial with Becker and Langeveld. Produced by Upston who was responsible for many other fine recordings at the now defunct Helen Young Studio, 'The Space Between' is an excellent work of art from start to finish. www.aerialmusic.co.nz
