Voom: Hello, Are You There?
By Shaun Chait
After a lengthy time in the wilderness, this return of the much admired Voom is welcomed. With the injection of half of Goodshirt into the line-up, Voom 2006 is a formidable beast and looks more stable than ever. 'Hello, Are You There?' proves its worth within the first two songs. Beautiful Day is warm and uplifting - not unlike The Flaming Lips. B Your Boy is a great fuzzy pop song. The first half of this album is particularly strong, including b-net fave King Kong and the chirpy, happy-go-lucky Happy Just Bumming Round. The latter half of the album is punctuated with some lovely floating numbers. Recorded and produced in 'various basements, bedrooms and studios around Auckland', the sound is a testament to the talents of the band members. The package is topped off with some lovely artwork courtesy of frontman Buzz Moller and Sean Kothe. Out on Lil' Chief Records.
