Onelung: Binary Pop Songs

By Jacob Connor
Sample-based electronica from Monkey Records, these binary pop songs usher in a sunny jazz-pop vibe that somewhat vanquishes winter's snuffling shroud. Plenty of painstakingly arranged swinging sounds in the best possible taste from Kevin Tutt. I'm getting flashbacks of Kronos Quartet, Galliano, Mr. Scruff and Future Sound of London. Forget that though, the palette here is various and multi-hued and the styles wide-ranging and diverse. It's mostly about good times with vocal cues dropping hints about feelin' alright, holidays and sunshine. Seems like an exhortation to unwind, have a cocktail and slink into something comfy. The concluding tracks curl into a more contemplative space once you've dropped your guard. A software inventory in the liner notes runs longer than the shout-out column. It's tough to pick recorded live instrumentation from samples, but the credited line-up of contributing musicians include Andrew Denton on guitar and a raft of vocalists as well as Tutt himself on bass. Three years in construction in his home studio, following previous release 'Nu Scientist', this is a pleasing collection worth acquainting yourself with. Conray, Sola Rosa and Rhian Sheehan are in the neighbourhood.
