Phil Joel: The Deliberate People

By Tim Page
Currently resident in Nashville, Newsboys’ bass player/vocalist and former Drinkwater front man Phil Joel presents his latest solo offering. Undisputedly Christian, this album shows another side of Joel. Where the Newsboys target is to cross over into a mainstream market, here is an album for a definite target audience. It comes across as the work of a devoted believer encouraging other believers to go deeper in their faith, with 'The Deliberate People' being companion to a similarly named web-based discipleship and Bible reading programme, although the musicianship and recording enables it to stand tall on its own. The album was recorded in Nashville and mastered at the legendary Abbey Road in London, and as such the quality of production is world class. The songs are highly vulnerable in their intimacy, giving deep insight into the shape of Joel's faith journey. Overall this is a very classy album.
