Nesian Mystik: Freshmen
By Andrew Hughes
I remember wondering what had happened to the Nesian’s a year ago. Label problems? Group trouble? Just speculation from a concerned journalist. Before I had even got my fingerprints on ‘Freshmen’, the first two singles had already achieved Top 10 success, while the album went Gold in its first chart week. The album gives us a few windows back to ‘Polysaturated’ on Rhythm and One Time, yet showcases a more mature Nesian Mystik which now includes turntable artist Notiq. The ‘Nesian sound’ is rare on the album which is straight R&B, leaving little space for other flavours. This makes the album’s tracks sound familiar to each other but also sets a theme, in contrast to their first album. Mastered by Jim Duvall at M3 Studio, the album itself was written in its entirety by Nesian Mystik and recorded by beatmaker Dmon. There are some deja vu songs including the huge single If It’s Cool. Sampling Shout To The Top by Paul Weller, the beat is exactly the same as To The Top by Alchemist featuring Big Twin and Evidence. That said, the track order works very nicely, as each joint joins the next seamlessly throughout. Not saturated with featured artists there are still some cameos in the form of JB, Tuff Enchant, Shihan the poet and Ali who provides the beat on So Good, which I believe will be the next single.
