YFC: Ricochet
By Gareth Shute
YFC existed primarily in Christchurch in the earlier 80s but reformed last year for a reunion show. Good timing since the post-punk grooves that YFC had originally been known for have since been resurrected in a latest wave of musical grave-robbing. These days a three-piece that consists of two bassists (Jonathan Ogilvie and Grant Horsnell) and a drummer (Michael Daly) is probably not so shocking, and YFC do it particularly well. One bass fills out the sound with distortion while the other plays high metallic lines that carry the melody. In other places the basses are off-beat to one another, playing chords or complementary lines - similar to the chop-changing style of Bloc Party, except on basses, and more darkly-edged. The vocals do seem more out-dated - similar to the talking/yelling style of The Gordons/Bailterspace. The album has been put out by Failsafe Records. It certainly doesn’t look a professional pressing, but the music may still make it a worthy purchase for those interested in one of the stronger bands to come out of NZ’s own post-punk scene.
