Various: On the Horizon: A Songwriter's Collection
By Liz Barry
It’s a typically cold night in Wellington. I’ve just got home and into the CD player goes ‘On the Horizon’ Songwriters Collection. I want to say thanks NZ Musician for sending me this album. And thanks to Nick Hohepa, Alistair Burns and all those involved in this compilation which provides a rare and wonderful insight into Auckland’s singer/songwriter scene. Instigated by Hohepa in 2005, the Diablo Open Mic Nights at Little Rainforest Studios have helped fill the gap left by the closure of The Temple. The growing popularity of these nights inspired Nick to create this project, and the results are stunning. Here is a diverse group of talented artists whose songs you’ll likely fall in love with. Actually, love in all its various forms, is the theme running through the songs here. From the beautiful opening Cry No More by Laura Evans, to the plaintive Wait by ex Mozelee front man Marc Hamilton, to Andrew Healy’s moving Little King, plus new voices like Laura Downey and Matthew Mitchison. Nicely packaged, with a booklet describing the project, photographs and artist details. A homegrown gem.
