Louie Knuxx: Wasted Youth

By Andrew Hughes
People tend to develop traits that are unique to their upbringing - humour for example, or confidence. Listening to this album it is obvious that Louie Knuxx is extreme in these areas, packing gutter gusto in every line while still managing to pull out the likeability factor. This album is straight street music, oozing tales of broke pocketed drug abuse and egotistical posturing, creating blurry images of a wasted youth. Hailing from New Plymouth, and a seminal part of Breakin Wreckwordz camp, Knuxx is a well rounded character who possesses the ability to create catchy hooks, pick solid beats and diversify lyrical content consistently throughout his 18 track debut. Cameos come from local MC’s like Con Psy, PNC, Tourettes and Cyphanetik with further exposure of the highly talented vocalist and saxophonist Maia Rata. Introducing a bluesy feel to hip hop on cuts like They Call Me, Don’t Cry For Louie and the ever so slick What I Do, Louie also dabbles in crunk on Broke As Fuck while still maintaining a trueschool style with Fly and Drink Myself Sober. ‘Wasted Youth’ was recorded entirely at Bee Dub Studios in Parnell and is backed by talented beatmakers Exile, 22, Kase, Saia and Shadow Squad to name a few. I feel that credit is due, but the album may well offend some second hand listeners.
