Hardfill: Bad Harvest
By Martyn Pepperell
Hardfill are an indie group operating out of Christchurch and 'Bad Harvest' is a self-funded street release. Recorded at Arnie Van Bussell's Nightshift Studios and it features Jeremy Burgess in the drum chair and trumpet work from Micheal Russell of ex-Newton Hoon, Midnight Oil, Netherworld Dancing Toys fame. Musically we are dealing with a wide spectrum of rock influenced vibes. The addition of Hammond organ, piano and trumpet parts does a lot for this release, lifting it away from monotony and filling out the sound. Even listening on studio monitors and I couldn't hear any obvious flaws, which means the production is great for a low budget release. Well worth checking out, especially if you are looking for something a little deeper then the average major label rock album.
