Anti-Clockwise: Artificial Light
By Kent Walsdorf
If you can imagine a land of philosophers delving into theories of Freudian primordial ID then you'll understand why 'Artificial Light' would likely to be their background music. Brain Crook, the sole composer and producer, creates an extremely uneasy atmosphere throughout the overall dark journey he submits us to. Both analogue- and synth-based sounds have a whole smorgasbord of disrupting effects applied to them. Being a guitarist in The Renderers, The Terminals, and Flies Inside the Sun, Crook unsurprisingly uses the guitar as either the framework for structural stability or as the main catalyst for atmospheric disorder. The melancholic vocal and simplistic melody is used more as an instrument, supporting the music rather then the traditional focal point. Lyrical substance was hard to find convincing but still offered valid insights to Crook's personal perspective. If you're in the market for a surreal, aurally disharmonic, experimental excursion or just want to stay awake for 45 minutes, give this self-released album a listen.
