Martha Louise: Sense of Place
By Tim Page
Martha Louise is a folk/country singer of significant experience, having been a member of country trio Gentle Annie in the early '80s, and having numerous TV, radio and folk festival appearances to her credit. 'Sense of Place' is a compilation of two albums, 'Mixed Feelings' and 'Changing Tides', recorded before CDs were manageable for any but the most well heeled. Several well known covers mingle with 14 original tracks, serving as a prelude to Martha Louise's forth-coming release currently being recorded at Wellington's Braeburn Studios. Considering the vintage of some of these tracks, recorded at the now-gone Mandrill Studios in Auckland, and Wellington's Marmalade Studios in the days of analogue tape, the production stands up nicely. Musicianship is outstanding, and for the most part uncluttered, with acoustic guitar and Appalachian mountain dulcimer as well as a list of contributing musicians that reads like a who's who. Now legendary names like Brendan Power, Martin Wynch and Frank Gibson Jnr among others. If there's a criticism, it's that this album would lose nothing by being a bit shorter.
