Nikki Duncan: Braeburn 007
By Mike Moroney
Another Robbie Duncan production in more ways than one. Nikki is the daughter of the renowned Wellington musician, producer and recording engineer. What started out as a demo recording for the 16 year old singer/songwriter has ended up as a most respectable album. Lots of care has been taken with the presentation of these original songs which could have turned out quite samey with just vocal and guitar. Instead there are gorgeous textures and moods throughout, Steve Cournane's drums and the Duncans' electric guitars blend nicely with the acoustic feel of the album. I like the songs because they're not all wordy, there's plenty of room for some musical exploration. Nikki Duncan has an expressive voice, if a little restricted in range, with heaps of promise of becoming an engaging performer in the near future. She certainly has the pedigree. Nice to see the old familiar Braeburn driveway on the back cover.
