Mars: Live from Hempfields
By Kent Walsdorf
It's not often that my scribbled thoughts after first listen to a debut read things like 'rich textures', 'instant appeal' and 'catchy melodies'. Recorded at Avalanche with Rob Mayes behind the desk, this three year-in-the-making album displays the massive talent of Mars' only driving force Stephen McIntrye. Formally involved in the Flying Nun movement, McIntrye delivers an intrinsically constructed, well produced pop-rock album delivering intervallic harmonic progressions, lush vocal harmonies alongside credible lyrics that talk about life and love. Having busked in Asia for over a decade before returning home and setting up base in Auckland, it's no wonder the guitar playing and arrangement has been a well though out process. Not overplayed nor underdeveloped, but supportive and interesting throughout. From the opening rocker On the Way to the beautifully crafted I Love You this album is a diverse, easy on the ears, summertime winner. Take a listen and love it.
