Gahu: Shell Money
By Mike Moroney
Afro-Kiwi fusion, afrobeat jazz, highliife, traditional - just some of the words that Gahu use to describe themselves. I can't do much better. With a world music sound as fine as anything you'd hear on any Womad stage, Gahu are at once funky and immediate. Amazing Ghanaian rhythms are somehow given a Pacific R'n'B feel. By all accounts this is a hot live act and this recording nails some of that heat along with more traditional (Ghanaian) styles. Built around the colourful and energetic dancing, singing and drumming of Yaw Boateng, there is much in the CD liner notes to inform the various pieces, their names and indeed the title of the album itself. The songs are steeped in history and politics and draw a strong relationship between Africa and New Zealand, this is a work of continuing relevance. Listen once and enjoy the rhythms, listen again and take on board the message. More at www.gahu.co.nz
