Throw: Dreambaby Goodbye

By Renee Jones
In 1991, bassist/guitarist Rob Mayes and drummer Steve Birss of seminal Christchurch band Dolphin joined forces with lyricist/vocalist Jeremy Taylor - whose song craftsmanship I've long thought to be amongst the best in the country - and Throw were formed. In 1992 they released the sublime EP 'All Different Things' followed by the album 'Rememory' in 1995. The band split, but had left a legacy of unreleased tracks which Mayes has spent the last 10 years tinkering with for release as 'Dreambaby Goodbye'‚ - part of his label Failsafe Records‚ Retrogenic series which has been covered in a previous NZM issue. The songs on 'Dreambaby Goodbye' are a product of the early '90s but stand the test of time; moody dynamics, soaring guitars and melancholic songs of love and loss add up to worthy slices of indie rock. Fans of Throw or Jeremy Taylor's later work would be well advised to investigate, and fans of indie guitar music generally should enjoy this collection.
