Michael Taylor Group: Quintiplicity
By Mike Moroney
Immediately reminiscent of Blood, Sweat and Tears with the tight arrangement of horn and rhythm sections. Nine well-executed jazz compositions from this quintet (trumpet, alto sax, guitar, bass and drums), eight penned by trumpeter Michael Taylor. There's a lot of space in the arrangements and only occasional flashes of individual virtuosity, the dreamy Metheny-like guitar lines of Daniel Ryland being a particular favourite. It is at once both perfect background music and worth several hard listens as well. Drummer Darren Mathiassen and bassist Caleb Robinson carry the rhythm forward with a lightness of touch that gives the soloists free reign, although the whole album is a very controlled performance and never gets out of hand. An elegant package from the artwork to the recording. www.michaeljamestaylor.com
