Midwest Motor Parts Corral: Plateau Honey
By Tony Parker
Midwest Motor Parts Corral is a Wellington band that draws from the loosely defined and ever changing musical genre that is alt. country. 'Plateau Honey' is their sophomore release and illustrates the Americana influences with indie rock, country and folk combining to create a gritty guitar-based sound that at times approaches the ragged glory of Neil Young and Crazy Horse, but without the intensity. These influences also inform the songwriting although in taking on these influences there is a feeling that the band's own sense of musical identity is being overshadowed. The songs range from brooding acoustic tracks with plaintive melodies through to distorted guitar workouts and although there is diversity in the song styles, the band manage enough consistent form in the performances so that the overall mood of the record is maintained throughout. Taken as a whole 'Plateau Honey' shows a band working through their influences in order to establish their own identity in a musical style that has constantly shifting goalposts. Almost there but not quite.
