Ron Mitchell: Low Down Country
By Tony Parker
Southlander Ron Mitchell possesses one of those resonant baritones that is eminently suited to singing pure country, something he does with style and laid back ease. 'Low Down Country' is his debut recording and it has both (cowboy) boots planted firmly on the honky tonk stage with songs from the likes of Merle Haggard, Vince Gill and Garth Porter. It's the combination of such well chosen songs and Mitchell's voice that contributes in part to the success of this album. The other part of the equation comes in the form of good production and appropriate musical backing. Recorded and produced by Ross McNab at Sweetway Studios in the Catlins, the record has an authenticity that comes from McNab's sympathetic production values and the experienced musicianship of players like steel guitarist Red McKelvie and fiddler Marian Burns. Definitely from the old school of country music and as such it succeeds simply because it doesn't try to be anything else.
