Fly My Pretties: The Return of Fly My Pretties

By Shaun Chait
If there's one thing Black Seeds' frontman Barnaby Weir, master producer Lee Prebble and Loop Recordings have in common, it's that they don't do things by halves. In two seasons they have turned a little get together with their mates into one of the most anticipated and talked about live events on the calendar. The visual and aural package they present is lovingly put together with attention to detail, and this beautifully crafted CD/DVD/booklet in its own box bears evidence. The DVD tracklisting mirrors the CD, with a few additional numbers. The line-up this time includes 14 musicians of varying genres and styles, combining to create songs dressed in different clothes, and providing a snapshot of the Welli music scene in the process. With artists' home territories including folk, rock, reggae, roots, blues, indie, country, soul and electronica there's plenty to dine on, but perhaps the biggest enjoyment for the listener is in the fine selection of voices on offer. Hollie Smith smolders on Miracles, Adi Dick (Get Out), Sam Scott (Don't Start) and the Age Prior/Tessa Rain combo all follow in quick succession, before Age, Adi and Barnaby combine harmonies in Shouldn't I Know. Quality songwriting and expert musicianship lets these voices shine. Pretty fly.
