Bing Turkby: The Barrel is Empty
By Jacob Connor
The bard of Turakina is back and irrepressible as ever with more self-mythologising and character portrait. He seems to have honed his guitar and recording skills since 'Have You Seen Me Vanquishing People Lately' (I somehow missed the fifth album) even using the same equipment. Some tracks are positively swinging. Latent spoof heavy metal inclinations emerge, particularly on Oompaloompa Battle. In fact, Spinal Tap is a fair reference, along with the lo-fi irreveverence of Wendyhouse (Cited influences are Bad news and Roxette). So what do you get? Sloppy drumming, fuzzy guitar, clever wordplay and a lot of laughs over the course of 16 tracks, delivered in Bing's inimitable Kiwi hayseed surrealist style. He has character, humour and (obviously) time to burn - in a way it is futile to resist his ambition. A word of warning - there's absolutely no resale value for this material. Available from PO Box 1573, Palmerston North.
