Sharkface: Faces of Vitriol
By David Gideon
A 'to the bone' selection of what I would call 'street cred' folk/poetry, 'Faces Of Vitriol' is as stark naked as most newborns. Mark Williams Thomas died in 1996 leaving a more than interesting collection of raw recordings. Sometimes when listening to tracks like I'm Waiting (recorded 1983) and I Like It (recorded 1984) I'm reminded of groups like The Fall and The Axemen. Mark is quite frank, and at times unapologetically rude, drawing vivid images of drug use, personal relationships and street life. Kanaky brings out the protester supporting independence in New Caledonia. Alistair Galbraith recorded the cool and avant garde Abbo Hunt in Dunedin in 1990. Mark loved to tackle social issues with an uncensored, uncompromising outlook using music and live performance to convey an honest perspective of life with no silver lining. Rest in peace bro'.
