Ross Mullins: Tidemarks
By Karen q Temple
Subtitled 'Ross Mullins sings New Zealand poets featuring Caitlin Smith', this is a worthy project showcasing some great NZ poets in musical form (Alistair Te Ariki Campbell, Robin Hyde, James K Baxter, ARD Fairburn, Ruth Gilbert and Mullins himself), which makes this often-times over-looked artform much more accessible for many people. Featuring notable musicians Peter Scott (Bluespeak), Nigel Gavin (Nairobi Trio), Vince Pavitt, Tatiana Lanchtchikova and the fabulous Caitlin Smith, the musicianship is exemplary. The stunning vocals of Smith along with the great selection of (mostly) love poems are for me the highlight of this work. The album has great production quality although given the progressive nature of the concept I would have liked to have seen some more cutting edge arrangements and interpretations. Very 'easy listening' - I'd describe it as ideal dinner party music. If you enjoy lyrics and appreciate the work of these great wordsmiths consider adding it to your collection.
