Dating Godot: Detroyers

By Dominic Blaazer
Dating Godot is the project of Christchurch's Andrew Spittle. With 'Destroyers', he has produced a CD that to my ears falls firmly into the 'let the world carry on around us' camp. Independent but not 'indie'. There is a healthy sense of melody and harmony at play here enmeshed with the irony that you might find on an album by Belle and Sebastian or The Verve. Think dark but with plenty of relief just below the surface in the spaces, in the bass/guitar interplay and in the occasionally varied feels and time signatures. The recording quality is excellent but the low vocal mix took a while to warm to. Anyway, the lyrics are printed in the also-downplayed-but-very-stylish booklet, so I got the gist of his demons.
