Various: Capitalrecordings #05

By Rick Hobbs
When I first listened to this compilation I thought it was a second rate assortment of b-sides with a couple of good songs on it from albums I already had. But listening to it more and more it began to grow on me. More suited to late night listening, it’s a collection of tracks from Capitalrecordings’ 12" family of releases and future albums from the label’s artists. It’s not the strongest release of theirs to date, but should find a home in a few CD collections, given the jazzy/dubby feel of the tracks. Members of The Blackseeds and Fat Freddy’s Drop feature on a number of the tracks in various incarnations (The Video Kid, Dub Connection, Flash Harry, Tehi), but it’s Mike Upton, aka Jet Jaguar, who provides the first highlight with his other outfit Datsun Stereo and the retro cut 4 My Pepys. Honourable mentions must go to Mephisto Jones for the track Remember Me, which features Hollie Smith on vocals and a lovely early 80s soft-porn guitar, and the Phoenix Foundation for Going Fishing, which stands up above everything else in terms of class. This CD isn’t for everyone who likes electronic music, but, how do I phrase it, would most suit those who prefer a 'mellower’ lifestyle. A mixed bag.
