Mark Laurent: The Light and the Shadowland
By Mike Moroney
What started out as a demo of Mark Laurent's songs has become an album for general release on the strength of the performance and material. Au natural - minimalist guitar and voice only - all done in one take. This is another fine product of Robbie Duncan's Braeburn studio in Khandallah, Wellington and great songs they are too - good stories told in a very assured voice. It is at times reminiscent of Neil Young, while at the same time sounding nothing like him. Not The Only One is the standout track for me, but there's plenty to keep the attention and the thoughtful inclusion of a lyric sheet is largely redundant as the vocals are clear and enjoyable. Good source material for anyone looking to develop some New Zealand repertoire in their band; many of these songs are just begging for the big treatment.
