Anika Moa: Thinking Room

By Shaun Chait
Twenty-one year old Christchurch singing starlet Anika Moa is being touted as the 'next big thing'. Already a former NZM cover star, she is being compared to a certain Runga sister. She actually has more in common with Jewel, including a record company - having become the first NZ artist to be signed internationally (Atlantic Records NY) without being established here first (local label is Warner Music). 'Thinking Room' is a beautiful debut album, highlighting the songwriting skills and clear, natural voice Moa is blessed with. Beginning with the lovely Good In My Head, the acoustic inspired atmosphere gives up the excellent Flowers For You, strong first single Youthful, and melancholic closer Harry And Leena's Song. 'Thinking Room' is emotive, haunting, and angelic. Recorded and mixed in New York, it introduces the world to a young New Zealand singer who's going places.
