Savant: Nothing Sacred
By Shaun Chait
The debut album from this Auckland-based outfit is a hard hitting dose of the new hard rock/metal sound. Nicely produced by Chris van de Greer, it has a clear and clean, gimmick-free quality that lets the music do all the talking. As you would expect Savant sound dark, angry, angsty and powerful - all the key ingredients to ensure fans of the genre won’t be disappointed. The guitar sound is huge and all-encompassing, driven by a rhythm section punching above its weight and a solid performance from singer Siah Ngata, whose voice has a nice Corey Glover quality at times. If there is one criticism of this album for me, it’s that the songs are a bit one paced and same-y. That said, there is no denying they do what they do well, and it will be interesting to see what these lads can do with a bit of a push. They are definitely on a par with like-minded bands from the States - the challenge for Savant is to find something that distinguishes them from those better placed others.
