Various: Loop Select 001
By Lukas Svoboda
Loop Select 001 is the first sampler release from Loop Recordings - the re-incarnated version of Loop magazine that disappeared earlier this year. Loop Recordings represents a refocused attitude - to showcase the finest sounds of cool contemporary music in NZ. The album comes with a large booklet that provides some background information and plenty of eye-candy. The compilation starts off with an organic sound that features several acoustic dominated tracks from Cloudboy, Rhian Sheehan, TrinityRoots and Confucius then moves into more dance/electronic territory with dubby house sounds from such artists as Ebb, Hormonic FREq and Peakshift. The compilation ends with a disco flavoured taster from Audio Source. The stand out track for me on the album is Peak Shift's Tick Tock, an ethereal dubby house track which takes the listener into a blissful synaptic journey. This track comes from Nurture recordings (www.nurturerecordings.com) and is typical of the Nurture sound that I personally love. Other excellent tracks are Cloudboy's Red Rubicon, a catchy almost poppy number which hooks the listener with its funky vocals laced with raspy trumpets and sitar-like sounds. Sienna's Wunderland Ave is another equally well presented cool dub-wise track and Rhian Sheehan's Waiting is haunting and eerie at the same time. Production quality is generally good on all tracks, however there are a few tracks on the CD that sonically could have done with a little bit more treatment. All in all this is an excellent compilation, showcasing the diverse sounds of local contemporary music.
