Wayne Mason: Same Boy
By Tony Parker
It's odd to think that 'Same Boy' is only Wayne Mason's second solo album, especially when you consider the musical journey that has seen him become one of our finest songwriters. Whether it was with Fourmyula, Rockinghorse or The Warratahs, Mason has always produced intelligently written pop-tinged songs and 'Same Boy' (Jayrem) is no different. This is music from the heart that explores both the strengths and the weaknesses of the human condition. And like many of our songwriters, surroundings play a big part in his songs. Sea, sky, land and the elements all become essential parts of the stories he tells. Connections with the past occur too as he reaches back to the Fourmyula with a Carl Evensen assisted Turn Your Back On The Wind while a stripped down version of Nature reinforces that song's standing as a New Zealand classic. Maintaining the Rockinghorse and Warratahs connection is producer/bassist Clinton Brown who, along with drummer Steve Garden, has created an intimate acoustic landscape that gives the album a feeling of closeness and warmth. All of which makes for an immensely satisfying listen.
