Slim: Drive Thru

By Jennifer Scott
As with a good batch of fish'n'chips, it's not just the shark and taties but how they are cooked that makes the difference. So it is with Slim's debut album, 'Drive Thru'. The ingredients are simple - rock'n'roll with tasty hooks and catchy melodies, making for an energetic and alert album that is musically deft and lyrically clever. Opener Real World, with its rousing chorus and rolling melody, sets the pace which remains relentless throughout. Money's Gone - a sentiment familiar to most musicians - and the barking DJ Sux follow. The 11 tracks seem to be over far too soon (clocking in around 40 minutes). Nearly every song has singalong appeal including the singles Low and Rise Up, my personal favourite being Switched Right Off with its staccato chorus and punchy guitar. Produced by Revolver Studio's Neil Baldock, there is not much studio trickery employed, save a few vocal manipulations, giving it a crisp and tight sound overall. As Jon Toogood says in the bio, "They rock!" - they do but it's not just volume and speed, there's substance here. Having seen the Christchurch-based band play recently, I know these songs sound awesome live but they don't rely on the live atmosphere to sound good on CD. Great cover art too - it will be easy to find this on the record store shelf and I suggest you do. Released on Wildside Records.
