Various: Deep Needs

By Peter McLennan
This tasty collection of Southern drum'n'bass styles comes from the steady hand of Christchurch DJ Pylonz and his crew. The 10 tracks presented here generally keep things pretty locked down to the heavier realms of drum'n'bass, branching out into some exciting directions, for instance Calling Down, a haunting mix of strident drum'n'bass rhythms and traditional Maori instruments, played by Tiki Taane from Salmonella Dub. Pylonz has built a solid reputation off the back of some fine remixes for the likes of Sheelahroc and Pitch Black - his remix of their Electric Earth is included here. Nightshade by Kaps is another highlight, all fractured melodies bouncing around on a skittish beat, and the closer Slingsong by Rook is topped by a beautiful floating piano line that adds a warm melodic feel to the heavy beats. The Flatlands have got it going on! Released on Pylonz' House of Fabel label.
