Various: Bulletholes 2: Let Me take You Hostage
By Andrew Healey
A showcase of new and old talent from Auckland’s busy Powertool label, the listener is served a smorgasbord of noise and melody with an alternative rock flavour on this 19 track compilation. As expected from a compilation, there are a wide range of styles here - soft ballads to all out anarchy. Aeroplane from Mikael H is a quirky little song reminiscent of early Split Enz; with odd time signatures and a
beautiful melody - I love it. Powertool’s first US signing Temporary Thing,
contribute Time is Slipping Away which displays expressive, throaty vocals, and solid musicianship. Voom’s You’re A Man is a starkly arranged song with just guitar, voice and some interesting EQ effects. Ex-Bat Robert Scott makes an appearance with The Too Hard Basket and, as usual, manages to deliver an infectious melody with some interesting guitar work. Though some others are a bit rough around the edges, ‘Bulletholes 2’ successfully demonstrates the depth of talent on the Powertool label. If you like music a little left of centre, go out and get this album.
