Montano: Montano
By Stephen Jewell
‘Montano’ is collaboration between two of New Zealand’s leading, now ex-pat electronic producers Michael Upton, aka Jet Jaguar, and Shanan Holm, alias Octif. The self-titled album was recorded in Melbourne, where Upton has lived for several years and where the now Wellington-based Holm resided at the time. Construction-wise, ‘Montano’ is a slight departure for the pair as instead of using their usual computers and synths, the album was assembled entirely using found sounds; recordings that Upton and Holm made around Melbourne’s city centre, from train rides to bird song and overheard conversations at a fruit and vegetable market. Sound-wise ‘Montano’ isn’t radically different from Upton and Holm’s solo output - the album is
mostly composed of low key, ambient tracks that occasionally leap out from the background to capture your attention. If you’re a fan of this country’s impressive downbeat, minimal electronic tradition then Montano rates an essential purchase.
