Monster Tracks: More Monster For Your Truck

By Martyn Pepperell
Monster Trucks is a collection of hip hop and breakbeat tracks from Nelson collective Master Pilot Corporation and producers Funk’n’slocuts (Minuit’s Ryan Beehre) and Mr Bonkin. The CD is a joint venture between Master Pilot Corporation, Frisbeedogrecords, Funk’n’slocuts and Invisible. Individual artists featured include Kurnel MC, MC Stylee, Lazy J and DJ Ziggidy. Funk’n’slocuts and Mr Bonkin have done a great job on the production providing some good hip hop and breakbeat riddims, but they are let down by many of the vocalists/rappers. Not so much the vocalists’ flows, mic technique or ability to sing hooks - the
problem is more the subject matter. The majority of the content is limited to personal boasts or stories of battling. A standout for me was Nobody Loves Me featuring Emma Hampser, a love sad epic that perhaps shows that Funk’n’slocuts is more suited to producing house/breaks than hip hop. Out through Border Music now.
