Jacqui Watson: Uncut
By Pauline Berry
There’s an assembly line in Nashville, USA, from which albums for folk and country artists from all over are being turned out, featuring great local Nashville session players and utilising Nashville engineers and producers. It’s all good. This CD, Jacqui Watson’s very personal debut, was also recorded in Nashville. All songs are
written by Watson who is now a Nashville resident. Self-described as ‘new country’, the lyrics tell stories reinforced with some good obvious hooks, which is standard country fare - but doesn’t warrant the ‘new’ description, as it’s simply typical. The production and instrumentation is very much on par, but unfortunately well below the standard set by the Nashville
component is Watson’s obviously inexperienced and pitchy singing abilities. It could be assumed this album was a ‘for its own sake’ project, except the press release states that ‘Jacqui is raising the bar for Kiwi new country artists’ - it is this I strongly object to. I feel more that the side is being let down. www.jacquiwatson.com
