Dean Chandler: Dean Chandler

By Peter Dent
Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Larry Campbell, Brady Blade ... Dean Chandler?! That’s right folks, all of the above music stars contribute to Paparangi (Wellington-way) boy Dean Chandler’s debut out on Unviversal. And an impressive album it is... 10 strong songs, all co-produced (and co-performed) by 'Pimps Are Us’ Brady Blade, Joachim Backman and Johan Carlberg, along with Chandler and many others. American Blade has been Emmylou Harris’ skinsman, and this was his initial foray into production. (He has since also produced for Brooke Fraser and Opshop.) They knew he was serious when Norah Jones walked through the studio door and (Bob Dylan’s guitarist) Larry Campbell did the same! The music is eclectic: folk rock, pop, country rock, even reggae. Comparisons could be made to Robbie Williams, Richard Pleasance or Jude Cole and there is a nod to Chandler’s own influences including Daniel Lanois, Neil Young and Coldplay. Dean Chandler could well be the next (Kiwi male singer/songwriter) big thing.
