Goodnight Nurse: Always and Never

Listening to this band’s debut CD I struggle to believe it’s from these parts - Goodnight Nurse have perfected the corporate punk/rock sound, and become a facsimile of successful American exports like Blink 182 and Greenday. Released by FMR, the album was recorded at Hamilton’s Dudley Studios, and produced by 48May’s Captain Hook. The playing is tight; the production slick, and the singing’s great - both lead and background. Suffer is a testament to their vocal chops, displaying lush harmonies complete with shoo wops. ‘Always and Never’ begins with the portentous Welcome to Hell, that employs a choir, a piano and what sounds like a church bell; the lads then angst their way through the remaining 12 songs in true new punk fashion, occasionally employing those customary tender intros that lead to huge crescendos. Their use of harmony sets these guys apart from many local rock acts - it’s just a shame they haven’t created a sound they can call their own.
