Dan Sperber Complex: I
By Nick Batt
Once I had successfully battled with the origami packaging, (thankfully those hours spent watching ‘Vision On’ as a kid paid off) and slid ‘I’ into the player, I found it was all worth the effort. Following on from his work with The New Loungehead and The Relaxomatic Project, Sperber sets his sublime guitar playing to work with the help of some equally able friends - Hayden Chisholm (alto sax), Tim Jaray (double bass), Samuel Rohrer (drums). Written over a five year period while he was working as a building labourer before being recorded in Berlin, Sperber’s album has a beautiful organic free flowing style that could loosely be pegged as jazz fusion but with groove. The kind of album that’s made for relaxed summer evenings. My only complaint is that I wished it was a little longer - maybe it’s a case of leaving them wanting more. I sure do.
