Rubicon: The Way It Was Meant To Be
By Tony Parker
Since Rubicon’s debut album ‘Primary’ three years ago, life for main man Paul Reid has been nothing if not interesting. A move to LA, marriage, the rest of the band departing via e-mail, a stop start acting career and some less than ideal dealings with LA’s finest have made for an up and down few years, as reflected in Reid’s songwriting on follow up album ‘The Way It Was Meant To Be’. Using American bassist Scott Zant, who along with drummer Frank Zummo is now a permanent band member, Reid recorded the album in producer Bruce Witkin’s (Foo Fighters, Steriogram) LA studio and it is this American input that seems to have reinforced the Rubicon sound. Bratty yet melodic punk/pop featuring the obligatory buzz saw guitars and frantic drumming seems to be the order of the day, although a move towards harder edged rock can be detected on some songs. A sprinkling of keyboard and acoustic guitar too but overall ‘The Way It Was Meant To Be’ for Reid is an accessible punk/pop album, albeit one that strongly reflects its American origins and influences.
