Coco Solid: Denim and Leisure

By Jessie Scoullar
This wordsmith duo have been stirring up the Auckland underground for several years now, dating back to Coco’s ultra-lo-fi ‘Rap’n’Roll’ release in 2003 and the duo’s debut ‘Denim and Leather’ in 2005. Now Coco and her rap partner Erik present this album, comprising remixes, remakes and razzed-up versions of the original ‘Denim and Leather’ tracks by a motley cast of Auckland’s underground superstars. Introduced by a heavily accented European raving about the greatness of Coco Solid’s live show, the album cuts to business with Star Signs recorded live in Leipzig, a reminder of their well-received at shows in London and Germany late last year. The remainder of the album (apart from a bonus second live track), features contributors such as 2 Da East and Simon Flower and the Vodaphone Warriors, casting their own moulds onto Coco and Eric’s standard minimalist-synth beats, while always retaining their cutting rhymes overflowing with raw attitude. Standouts include the City Newton Bombers’ take on Move It Or Lose It, White Saucer’s grinding Marz Attax and mixes of Jealous by Lovely Midget and Xtravagangsta, both of which achieve sinister effects through the use of vocal effects and menacing, grim beats. Something for everyone!
