Josie Campbell: Metal Roads

By Nick Batt
This is Josie Campbell's second album. Her first, 'Drifting at Whananaki' (1991) was used by National Radio for their 'Petticoat Pioneers' programme. For some then, this will be a long-awaited return. Campbell's folk style is probably best compared to Joni Mitchell or Tracy Chapman but with a slight Maori twist. Recorded at Braeburn Studios by Robbie Duncan, Campbell is capably assisted by a large crew which adds an extra dimension to a style in which acoustic-guitar-only accompaniment has traditionally been the norm. Campbell's songs have a distinctly New Zealand flavour to them and her solid songwriting makes for an album that is likely to become a favourite amongst fans of folk across the country.
