Dave Alley: Sowing The Wild Notes

By Nick Batt
If singer songwriter Dave Alley's debut album was a cake recipe it would go something like this: Take a pound of early Bruce Cockburn; add a dollop of Cat Stevens' percussion; flavour with a pinch of our own Derek Lind and stir before baking. Thankfully it's not a cake – it's a whole lot better. Featuring some superb acoustic guitar playing, Dave Alley has produced a unique album that blends blues, rock and folk infused with Latin as well as eastern percussion. Alley and certainly knows how to handle the acoustic guitar and plays most of the instruments on this recording with the exception of some electric guitar from Darren Hogwood, harmonica (Aron Neale) and some additional percussion by Rod Redgrave. Based in Pukekohe, Alley originally recorded the album on his four-track and then radically reworked it with the help of Neale and Ross Harris. The result is yummy!
