Aronas: Culture Tunnels

By Mike Moroney
He now calls Sydney home but Aron Ottignon had already started to reveal his extreme talent as a musician and composer long before he left New Zealand aged 17. He first recorded with his own jazz trio when just 14! Australia has embraced him with awards and accolades. This first release from Aronas shows a contemporary Australian jazz quartet combining the Keith Jarrett piano stylings of Ottignon with some electronica and clever percussion work. It has a dance music sensibility and has apparently been dubbed as 'punk jazz', but whatever, it is masterly. There is the clear sense that these works are performed rather than just recorded. I'm sure they sound this good live. The rhythm section is as beefy as all get-out and the grooves are solid and uncompromising. For all its sparseness, it's not laid back. Chic Corea would be proud to call it his own. Distributed by Vitamin Records
