Che Fu: Beneath the Radar

By Andrew Hughes
Welcome to the next episode. Presented to you by musical passion, cross-genre compilation, melodic intoxication, and a gang of rebellious drum outlaws Che-Fu bred in an underground bunker light years from your bedroom studio. So where do we start? York St. Much of the post-mission business was handled on these premises and some recording during the saga itself. Sampling was one weapon complimentary to the programming success and is evident in much of the onslaught. With the distinctive harmony of the general's voice, the sound is unique, and genuinely Kiwi, making this album futuristically vintage. Che incorporates traditional sampling methods with mashed drum sounds to accompany his vocals. While affiliates like Chip Mathews, Godfrey De Grut and Neil Baldock assist on several songs, Che handles the majority of instrumental duties creating Lightwork and ET Research as a lone soldier. Most entertaining is the continuously improved Hazaduz on the club-targetted Not That Special and Flax Mat Theory. The latest installment from Aotearoa's R&B godfather will tour you through guerilla jungles to arrive at tropical sea shores during sunset, and leave you with a graphic illustration of how music can move you.
