Amber Claire: Great Escape
By Tim Page
Her 2004 debut drew understandable comparisons to the likes of Sarah McLaughlin and Celine Dion. 'Great Escape' evokes thoughts of candlelight, and staring into the dying embers of an open fire. Recorded at Soundtrax in Auckland by James Hall and Nic Manders, the songs come from a variety of sources; some penned by Amber herself, others by producer James Hall and his old mate Greg Johnson. Added to this mix are a handful of carefully chosen covers by the likes of McCartney, Wonder, Goffin/King and even a very worthy rendition of Dave Dobbyn's classic You Oughta Be In Love. Amber has a stunning voice, and James Hall has done a stirling job in the producer's chair to present a very classy product. While all the covers are songs well worth revisiting, their summed inclusion shows a record label (Sony BMG) playing things well on the safe side. I have it on good authority that the originals are only a taste of Amber's songwriting ability, and we should in future hear more of what she has to offer.
