Anika Moa: Stolen Hill
By Shaun Chait
Anika Moa's greatest asset is the honesty in her music. I keep going back to her debut 'Thinking Room' because she is believable, raw in her emotion, and goes straight for the listener's heart. And she can write a great hook. These attributes, coupled with an angelic singing voice, are intoxicating. On this second offering - an album written after returning to NZ from the experience of recording and part-peddling her debut album in the States - she displays all the wares that got Atlantic in America so excited years back. Produced by Anika with Edmund McWilliams Jnr (aka Ed Cake - who adds his own little quirks), 'Stolen Hill' is an album of heartfelt, meaningful tracks capped off by the heartbreakingly beautiful first single In The Morning. I would've liked to have seen a lyric sheet included (as there was with 'Thinking Room') - maybe the subject matter was a little too personal, or maybe she just wanted listeners to have to work harder. Again mixed by Victor Van Vogt (Athlete, PJ Harvey) and including harmonies by one Bic Runga, 'Stolen Hill' is an album Anika should be proud of.
