Recloose: Hiatus on the Horizon
By Stephen Jewell
Detroit native Matthew Chicoine has lived in Wellington with his young son and NZ-born partner for three years now. As songs like Kapiti Dreams demonstrate, Chicoine already had New Zealand on his mind when he made his debut album 'Cardiology,' which was released in 2002 just after he first moved to this country but was actually recorded in Detroit. Since then, Chicoine has immersed himself in Kiwi culture and the difference between the two albums is significant. 'Hiatus on the Horizon' finds Chicoine embracing live musicians and vocalists, including most of Fat Freddy's Drop as well as various members of the Black Seeds and TrinityRoots. Highlights include Dust, which boasts a trademark sultry vocal from Joe Dukie, while Hollie Smith shines on Still Beyond Me and The Game Goes On. And while the album is released worldwide through prestigious dance label Peacefrog, LOOP Recordings have licensed it especially for New Zealand. Existing somewhere in-between Fat Freddy's Drop and Mark de Clive-Lowe this album should appeal to fans of both acts.
