ASUR: A Year of Wednesdays
By Tim Page
ASUR (pronounced As You Are) is the musical collaboration of John Stevens and Brett Rogerson and obviously a labour of love, 'A Year of Wednesdays' was recorded and engineered by the pair, as the title suggests, over a year of mid week evenings in their own purpose-built recording studio. The music is inspired by classic sounds from the '70s and '80s, and there are distinct echoes of artists ranging from Tracy Chapman to Bruce Cockburn. Primarily acoustic guitarists, the duo have extended themselves to learn the necessary skills to produce a full sounding result. A lack of intention to produce a commercial, radio-friendly album has resulted in a refreshing sense of artistic integrity. Overall this is a well-produced album, if there's one thing that lets it down it's that the packaging doesn't reflect the epic nature of the recorded material. I suspect any future ASUR offerings will be even more worthwhile. Further info from stspavilion@xtra.co.nz
